Cycling Around the World

Friedel and Andrew have cycled around the world. It’s difficult to capture their entire trip in one article so instead this is just an introduction to what they did, with links to their website if you need more details on bike touring. You can also learn a lot from their book.

What was it like

We set out in September 2006 to bike around the world. It was our first bike tour. On our way around the globe we experienced both the best and worst of times.

We were treated to amazing kindness from people all over the world and pitched our tent in some stunning landscapes (Kyrgyzstan always comes to mind).

We slogged up mountains, rode through pouring rain and pushed our bikes for miles on a dead-end goat track, followed by an entire Iranian village (we were trying to find a road on our map, which turned out not to exist). Even on the hardest days it was wonderful. Definitely the best experience of our lives so far!
How should you / did you train

We did some day trips but the best training we did – and which we recommend to everyone – is to just get out there and do it. There’s nothing like a few days on the road to help you sort out what does and doesn’t work for you.

Don’t listen to others when they say you’re crazy to take on such a challenge. You can do it, and it’s far easier and more rewarding than most people think.

Take it slowly and savour each day. When you rush you only tire yourself out and miss opportunities to meet people and enjoy the sights along the way. Eat lots of food (you burn through the calories while cycling). Keep a sense of humour, even when your bike breaks down.

No matter how big the challenge or problem, things always work out in the end.

Take lots of photos.

Above all, enjoy it. You may never get a chance to do this again.
